PESEL Number

The PESEL number is a unique identifier assigned to natural persons in Poland. It is essential for handling many matters, such as:

• Signing employment or rental contracts,
• Receiving social benefits,
• Registration with offices and institutions,
• Access to healthcare services.

To obtain a PESEL number, you need to:

• Complete the PESEL number application form.
• Prepare an identity document,
• Prepare a document confirming the purpose of obtaining a PESEL number, e.g., employment certificate, rental agreement, or documents confirming stay in Poland.

Ukrainian citizens who are staying in Poland due to the armed conflict can apply for a PESEL UKR number. This is a special form of PESEL number, assigned to persons with UKR status, which provides access to many benefits and services in Poland.

To obtain PESEL UKR, you need to:

• Complete the PESEL number application form.
• Provide an identity document confirming the information given in the application (if you don’t have one, signing the application is equivalent to declaring the truthfulness of the data).
• Attach a color photo in 35 x 45 mm format (if you are wearing headwear or dark glasses in the photo, a certificate confirming the necessity of wearing them is required).
• Persons over 12 years of age must provide fingerprints.

Obtaining a PESEL number does not require a stamp duty, however, it is important to prepare the appropriate documents and meet all formal requirements.
